The second phase of the long-pending metro construction work at Chingrighata began on Friday. Due to the ongoing work, traffic restrictions have been imposed for a specific period, according to Metro Railway authorities.
Officials stated that traffic control measures for the second phase will remain in effect from 8:00 PM on May 22 until 8:00 AM on May 25. Earlier, during the first phase, traffic movement was regulated from 8:00 PM on May 15 to 8:00 AM on May 18.
Work is currently underway to install two important girders over the EM Bypass in the Chingrighata area. The installation of one girder between pillars 317 and 318 has already been completed. Authorities said that traffic blocks are essential to complete the remaining work safely and efficiently.
According to metro officials, the project had remained stalled for more than one and a half years due to the lack of necessary permissions from the state government and Kolkata Police. Work resumed only after the required approvals were recently granted.
Alternative traffic arrangements have also been introduced to reduce congestion. Since work on the northbound section was completed during the previous weekend, a part of the main bypass has now been closed. In its place, a newly constructed diversion road has been opened for public use. Northbound vehicles are currently using this alternate route, while southbound traffic continues to operate normally without any changes.
The metro project had earlier become a subject of disagreement between the state government and metro authorities. The matter eventually reached the court, which directed both sides to resolve the issue through discussion, considering the importance of the project for public convenience.
After a long delay, the remaining work at Chingrighata has finally resumed. Once completed, this important section of the Orange Line connecting New Garia to the airport is expected to bring a major improvement to Kolkata’s transport system.
